Helping Hearts
What child can’t use a bit of “home” with them at the hospital? In an ICU, each room is filled with beeping machines, a sterile environment, and little comfort. The Helping Hearts program will provide homemade pillows to patients in the pediatric ICU. The goal of this program is to provide each patient with a gift that will brighten their day.
In addition, the nurses were always using Katie’s toys to prop up her ET tube or to keep an IV wire in place. The pillow can serve as the designated “prop” for medical staff that frequently needs a toy etc. to arrange a patient with extensive support.
Each pillow is handmade and has a “Kisses from Katie” label attached. The labels were created by Custom Couture Label Co. We thank them for their effort in creating a label that shows as much love as each of our pillows do! We have tested the pillows in the washer and dryer and they came out fine so parents can feel free to wash these when they get dirty.
Helping Out
Know how to use a sewing machine and would like to help? If you’d like to help create these pillows, click here to view the directions. All you’ll need from us are some labels and the templates for the pillows.
If you don’t know how to use a sewing machine, but still want to help with this program, there are other ways to do that.
- Donate fleece to be used to make the pillows. Fleece with small patterns work best since they pillows aren't that large.
- You can cut out pillows. All you’ll need is fleece and templates. No sewing involved!
- You can stuff pillows. Once the pillows are sewn, they need to be stuffed. Again, there’s no sewing involved. All you need is stuffing and our pillows.
- Host a “pillow party”. Pillows need to be cut, sewn, stuffed, and then finished (hand stitching). This is a great way to get together with some friends and help out a great organization!
